Wilmington Police To Participate in Home Base No Shave

November 1, 2019 by WPD Social Media

Chief Joseph Desmond announced today that the Wilmington Police Department is participating in “Home Base No Shave” during the month of November. While beards are not typically allowed for Wilmington Police Officers, Chief Desmond has authorized Officers to grow facial hair in support of Home Base,  a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program. The mission of Home Base  is to to heal the invisible wounds for Veterans, Service Members, and their Family Members. Participating Officers are donating or fundraising $100 each to Home Base.

“We couldn’t be prouder to support this organization,” said Chief Desmond “The Town of Wilmington does a great job supporting the veterans of this community and this is just another way we can help. Home Base works not only with veterans, but with their loved ones, who are dealing with the invisible wounds of war. We think their mission is so important that we invited them to participate in National Night Out this past summer. We wanted to give them the opportunity to reach out to Wilmington veterans.”

The mental health and wellness of those who have served in the military is of critical importance to the Veteran, their family, and the community in which they live. If you are experiencing difficulty, there is a range of mental health and support services available to you at Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program. September 27, 2019 by WPD Social Media

For the second year in a row, the Wilmington Police Department will be taking part in the “Pink Patch Project” to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support breast cancer research organizations in combating this devastating disease. Participating Officers will wear a Wilmington Police Department pink patch on their uniform during the month of October. The patch was designed by Officer Emily Stebbins, the Wilmington Middle School Resource Officer.

According to the Pink Patch Project website, there are more than 390 agencies participating in the program that have raised more than $1000000 for breast cancer research and support organizations.

Patches will be available for sale for $10 each at the Wilmington Police Department beginning on October 1. All proceeds from the patches will go to the Hope and Friendship Metastatic Breast Cancer Foundation, a Wilmington based organization.

Wilmington Police to Participate In National Coffee With A Cop Day

September 27, 2019 by WPD Social Media

The Wilmington Police Department would like to extend an invitation to area residents to join us for national Coffee with a Cop Day on Wednesday, October 2. Coffee with A Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when Officers from the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day.  Coffee with a Cop events are now held in all 50 states and has expanded to outside the Unites States to Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Latin America. It is one of the most successful community oriented policing programs across the country.

Locally organized by Community Liaison Detective, Ronald Alpers, the program is designed to give residents an opportunity to speak with Officers in a comfortable familiar setting. “Whether you have a crime tip, a neighborhood concern, a question, or just want to say hi, please come down!”, he said.

Chief Joseph Desmond stated, “In the past, people only interacted with the police in times of crisis or if they committed a traffic violation. We are changing that in Wilmington with programs like our Citizen Academy, Police Explorers, R.A.D., and National Night Out. Wilmington is growing and Coffee with a Cop is another opportunity for our officers to stay in touch with our residents.”

Thanks to the support of local businesses, Wilmington PD is holding three Coffee with a Cop events to allow as many citizens as possible to participate:

  • 6:30-8:00 am: Cumberland Farms, 205 Main Street
  • 8:00-9:00 am: Panera Bread, 228 Main Street (Wilmington Plaza)
  • 10:00-12:00 pm: Dunkin’, 357 Middlesex Avenue (Next to the RMV)

We look forward to seeing you there!
