The Training Division plays a vital role in maintaining the professionalism, readiness, and effectiveness of the Wilmington Police Department. From the moment a new officer begins their journey at the police academy, the Training Division oversees every aspect of their development and ensures that all officers remain equipped to meet the challenges of modern policing.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive training in firearms, Tasers, use of force, and defensive tactics to prepare officers for a wide range of situations.
  • Ensuring that all officers remain current with annual training requirements mandated under Massachusetts law. This includes topics critical to public safety, such as legal updates, de-escalation techniques, and mental health response.
  • Providing ongoing education and skill-building opportunities for all officers to meet evolving public safety needs.
  • Identifying and coordinating external training programs that allow officers to further enhance their expertise and stay at the forefront of law enforcement practices.

Through rigorous and continuous training, the Training Division ensures that every member of the Wilmington Police Department serves with competence, confidence, and a commitment to the highest standards of service.
