WILMINGTON, MA – The Wilmington Police Department is proud to recognize the outstanding work of Officer Jonathan Morales, whose proactive policing and keen investigative instincts played a critical role in dismantling a major organized crime group responsible for widespread catalytic converter thefts across New England.
Officer Morales’ actions were recently commended in a letter to Chief Joseph Desmond from Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Tucker of the Massachusetts State Police Division of Investigative Services. The letter detailed how Officer Morales’ field interview with a suspect in Wilmington provided a key piece of intelligence that directly linked Rafael Davila and his criminal crew to the thefts.
Beginning in 2020, Massachusetts and the surrounding states experienced an alarming surge in catalytic converter thefts. In response, the Massachusetts State Police Criminal Information Section, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Fusion Center’s MACrimeNet program, launched a multijurisdictional investigation. The investigation ultimately identified the “Rafael Davila crew” from Springfield, MA, as a major player in these thefts.
Because of the surge in catalytic converter thefts, evening and overnight patrols were extra vigilant in areas of town that were prime targets for this type of crime. In October 2022, as part of his routine patrols, Officer Morales conducted an interview with an individual who was later found to be acting as a lookout for the crew in an industrial area of Wilmington. His meticulous documentation of the encounter not only identified the lookout but also provided crucial evidence that helped investigators solidify their case against the organization.
Lieutenant Colonel Tucker specifically praised Officer Morales for his initiative, attention to detail, and dedication to proactive policing, which ultimately contributed to the takedown of the Davila crew and a significant reduction in catalytic converter thefts across the region.
Additionally, the Wilmington Police Department acknowledges the contributions of Detectives Julie Pozzi and Ronald “Butch” Alpers, who played an instrumental role in the investigation.
“The work of Officer Morales is a testament to the professionalism and commitment of our officers to keeping Wilmington and the surrounding communities safe,” said Chief Joseph Desmond. “His vigilance and dedication to duty reflect the highest standards of law enforcement, and we are proud to have him on our team.”
The Wilmington Police Department remains committed to working alongside our state and local partners to combat organized crime and ensure the safety of our residents.
