Wilmington Police Department Receives Funds for Extra Labor Day Patrols to Get Impaired Drivers off the Roads

The Wilmington Police Department has received a grant from the Massachusetts Highway Safety Division of the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) to increase impaired driving patrols in an effort to save lives. The additional enforcement is part of the state’s participation in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign and is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The campaign, which runs from August 12 through Labor Day, will include Massachusetts State Police and over 145 local police departments.

The Wilmington Police Department will have extra patrols on the road will the specific intent of finding and arresting impaired drivers

“We lost 133 people in crashes involving a driver who was over the legal limit of intoxication in Massachusetts in 2014,” said Jeff Larason, Director of the Highway Safety Division. “The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is both an educational campaign and an enforcement effort to promote sober driving.  With so many safe alternatives to driving impaired – ride sharing or taxi service, the MBTA, and designated drivers – there’s no excuse not to plan ahead how you will get home safely.”

According to NHTSA, on average, more than 10,000 people died each year between 2010 to 2014 in drunk-driving crashes across the country. During the 2014 Labor Day holiday weekend, 40 percent of the fatalities in traffic crashes involved drunk drivers — the highest percentage during the five-year period from 2010 to 2014.

Wilmington Police Department To Host National Night Out Event on August 2

The Wilmington Police Department is pleased to announce that on Tuesday, August 2, we will be joining with communities across North America to host our 3rd annual National Night Out.  Made possible through a grant from the Cummings Foundation, the event will feature fun & games, emergency vehicle & equipment displays, a K9 demonstration, and more! The Massachusetts National Guard has partnered with us this year and will be landing a Black Hawk helicopter on the little league field.

Once again, Red Heat Tavern will be manning the grills and Target will be providing water and will also be raffling off two kids bicycles! The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will be joining us for the first time this year and will be providing ice cream to kids of all ages!

After dark we will be showing Disney’s “Zootopia” on the big screen, so bring a chair or a blanket to sit on. We’ll supply the popcorn!

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

We would like to invite all Wilmington residents to join us at Rotary Park on August 2 from 6-8 pm for this fun and exciting event.
