Chief Joseph Desmond is pleased to announce that the Wilmington Police Department is currently in the process of organizing a Police Explorers Post. Exploring is a nationwide career-oriented program for young men and women ages 14 through the age of 20. The program provides young people with an opportunity to learn about a career in law enforcement and a chance to network with sworn police officers in the community. Exploring offers them a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition and other activities. Additionally, the program promotes personal growth through character development, respect for the rule of law, physical fitness, good citizenship and patriotism.
Made possible through a grant from the Woburn based Cummings Foundation, the program will involve monthly meetings as well as field trips and opportunities to assist the Police Department in a non-law enforcement capacity at certain community events. The program will be run by Wilmington Police Officers using the national curriculum created by Learning For Life, a non-Scouting subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America.
