The Wilmington Police Department was honored at AAA’s annual Community Traffic Safety Awards luncheon on December 16 at the Burlington Marriott.
The Wilmington Police Department was awarded AAA’s Silver Award in recognition of our efforts to promote traffic safety as well as for our continuing efforts to educate and protect the citizens of Wilmington.
Additionally, Officer Ronald “Butch” Alpers and Wilmington DPW Operations Supervisor Jerry Lawrenson were recognized as AAA Traffic Safety Heroes. The two were nominated by Lieutenant Joseph Desmond, who is the commander of the Wilmington Police Department’s Traffic & Safety Division.
Officer Alpers was recognized for not only his persistent efforts in enforcing traffic laws, but also for his efforts to educate the public about traffic safety. Ofc. Alpers proactively works to identify traffic safety issues around town and often partners with our Traffic & Safety Officers to target distracted drivers. Ofc. Alpers serves as a Field Training Officer and works hard to pass his knowledge on to the next generation of police officers.
Mr. Lawrenson was recognized for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty to assist the Wilmington Police Department with traffic safety related issues. At the Town’s Fun on the Fourth celebration in July and the Police Department’s National Night Out event in August, Mr. Lawrenson works closely with members of our Traffic & Safety team to put up signage and barricades to ensure the safety all motorists and pedestrians. When our officers identify traffic safety issues such as missing or obstructed traffic signs, Mr. Lawrenson ensures the issues are rectified immediately. The Wilmington Police Department is grateful to Mr. Lawrenson for his continued assistance.
The Wilmington Police Department congratulates and thanks Ofc. Alpers, Mr. Lawrenson, and all of our Police Officers for their hard work on behalf of the citizens of Wilmington.
