K-9 Kimo 10/06/03 - 10/26/16

It is with deep sadness that the Wilmington Police Department announces the passing of retired K-9 Kimo.  Kimo was born in the Czech Republic on October 6, 2003. He came to the Wilmington Police Department in 2004 where he was assigned to patrol with Officer Eric Palmer. Kimo was certified in both patrol work and narcotics detection through the Boston PD K-9 Academy, United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), and the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA). He competed in several USPCA PD-1 field trials, almost always finishing in 3rd-1st place in all events. Kimo was also the Region Champ for both Region 4 and Region 9 on more than one occasion.

On patrol, Kimo was the  epitome of a police dog. He was always highly focused, driven, and had a true grasp on what his role was as a police dog. In the time he served with WPD, he made countless drug seizures. He tracked and located everything from missing children, mentally ill and suicidal persons, and several dangerous fleeing criminals, some who would not have been located if it were not for him. Kimo was not only a great aid to the Town of Wilmington, but also to several neighboring communities.

On top of being a no nonsense “Street dog”, Kimo had a softer side, happily performing in numerous public demonstrations in the schools, for the public, and for various organizations. Kimo loved to come into roll call at the beginning of the shift with his toy, always knowing that he could get an officer to play with him. Kimo served with pride and distinction until 2010, when he was forced to retire early due to a degenerative spinal disease. After retirement, Kimo lived out the remainder of his years with Officer Palmer at his home.

You will be missed Kimo, you served us well.
